Powerlifting

Its not just big people lifting big weights.

Powerlifting consists of three main lifts – Squat, Bench press and the Deadlift.

“You can powerlift just for the enjoyment and all the benefits without the bulk.”

Why lift?

Lifting helps to strengthen muscles and increase bone density.   Helpful to all ages but especially helpful and beneficial to women who may be peri menopausal or menopausal.

The major misconception that has been pushed on us for years is that lifting weights makes people bulky and muscular.  Powerlifting, for women, will make you leaner.   Testosterone is the main driver of muscle growth and as a woman, you do not have enough to make you look like a body builder after one lifting session.

Powerlifting does create muscle and muscle burns more calories than fat.   The end result from any kind of resistance training is usually a leaner stronger body.   Obviously diet is a key part of training and cannot be neglected.

Powerlifting can be done competitively or purely as a hobby. Whatever you choose is up to you. Powerlifting consists of three main lifts. Each lift engages multiple muscle groups in the body. It is hugely satisfying and is guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Powerlifting conjures up images of enormous men or women lifting huge weights and this is unfortunate. Powerlifting consists of three main lifts – Bench Press, Squat and Deadlift. All three exercises are functional (this means they have real everyday benefits) and help develop strength and improve fitness. They do not automatically mean you will become enormous and muscle bound. You can powerlift just for the enjoyment and all the benefits without the bulk.

Several women who have started powerlifting with me over the years have been amazed at the way they have firmed up and got slimmer. Two of the benefits that no one ever associates with the word ‘powerlifting’.

Powerlifting coaching is available with Peak Fitness. I have a competition style bench, squat rack and platform set up and can coach for general fitness or competition.

Why not try it? You never know, you might like it!
